Summer Lovin’!

Rae-Bird!This month’s blog comes courtesy of our social media guru, Rae! Enjoy!!

Summer; AKA: a great time to grab some pals, get the heck out of the city and head to the mountains for some camping, hiking and other such wilderness adventures. I believe this is one of Michelle’s, the Chief Artisan and mascot of The Newget Kompany, favourite things to do.  Though, you’d never guess this, judging by her often immaculate hiking boots and well cleaned gear. Honestly, to know Michelle is to know a tale or two of an adventure gone humorously awry. Like the time she took a wrong turn and accidentally found herself, and her designer shoes, on an off road hike!

My personal favourite tale of Michelle’s hiking adventures, is the one that I learned of shortly after joining the Newget team. A fellow Newgeteer and I were doing a little research into the origin story of the founding of the Newget Kompany. It took some good natured cajoling and some persistent nagging, but we got to the bottom of the story.

“The year was 1989 and we find young Michelle, with feathered hair and shoulder pads, growing up in Edmonton with the dream of one day joining the Tobias family Monster Truck Racing team with her very own rig, “Big Betty”. But little did she know destiny had other plans for her…

On a spiritual journey through the Japanese Alps, she hiked and explored and discovered the beauty of the mountains. She also got lost. Really, really lost. She claims that just as she thought she’d never find her way back, she stumbled upon the habitat of an ancient Snow Monkey.  Michelle insists that it was this Snow Monkey – her “Sensei” – that taught her the ancient ways of the social purveyor – generosity, kindness, fun-ness, and the art of making the perfect martini. (But we know the real story: that she was discovered passed out from hunger and fatigue on a trail just outside of a small village by a group of German tourists, about 20 minutes after she left the visitor center).” *

Of course Michelle made it back to safety and then on to further adventures – even such romantic adventures as attending a wedding or two. After all, it was actually at a wedding that she first met a candied dessert that would inspire her creation of The Newget Kompany.

Would you like to know what the worst part is about Michelle’s story of getting lost in the wilderness? Not having any snacks! Dehydration is important to avoid, but everyone knows that the fatigue and frustration from hunger is much more irritating! There are creeks and rivers that run through the rocky mountain trails that can help satisfy thirst in a pinch, but nothing ruins the majestic beauty the mountains like a growling tummy.

The lesson learned is clear: All great adventures, either the romantic or the daring, must come with snacks! So when you head out of the city this summer, in case of misadventures on your journeys, please bring snacks. Don’t let hunger impair your sense of direction!!

Not only does Newget love hiking, but it also makes a great Trail Mix additive! Either grab a bag of sliced pieces or slice up a bar yourself and add some Newget to your favourite medley of nutritious snacking bits – like dried fruits: raisins or apricots or cranberries or cherries or blueberries, and nuts: peanuts, sunflower kernels, whole almonds, or pecans. You can even spice up the mix with some pieces of dried candied ginger.

So if you’re anything like Michelle, you know the joys of a good adventure – from getting lost in the woods to a random gathering of your favorite people. In either case, Newget will always make an excellent addition.

Love, Newget

To Market, To Market!

The Edmonton City Market Downtown is back outside on Jasper and 104st starting Saturday, May 18th and we can’t wait!  This market has had a special place in The Newget Kompany’s heart since the summer of 2007.

This is where Newget made its first appearance in a market setting, and this summer will mark the sixth year that Newget has participated in the Downtown Market.   We’re just as excited for this Market season as we were for our very first.  Newget has many wonderful retail partners, but the Market is truly our home.

You may have found yourself wondering how Newget gets to the market every Saturday.  You see us there, and you marvel, “Where have you been all my life??”

Well, here are the steps to the market process, from the melting and blending of the ingredients to the delight of you enjoying your new favourite treat:

1.  Newget is created in a top secret facility in east Edmonton. The chocolate is melted down and ingredients are blended to make the vats of our seven favourite Newget flavours.  Once blended, the molten mixtures are poured into slab forms to cool.Newget Elves (our cooks!) White Berry Blast - Ooey Gooey! White Berry Blast - getting there! White Berry Blast - that;s more like it!

2.  Once cooled, we take the slabs and slice and dice them into ‘two bite’ sized pieces and bars.

3.  Then we weigh, package, sticker and label, oh my!

4.  As soon as our perfect little packages are assembled and inspected, we box the little soldiers into crates.   And then we march them off, along with all our other market tables and tents and props, to the city market space, bright and early Saturday mornings.

5.  We beautify our market space, set up the display and get samples ready.

6.  The day is then spent with lots of smiles and chatting while freely plying strangers with samples of delicious Newget.

7.  You buy and enjoy Newget while wandering the vendors of the City Market Downtown.

City Market Newget Packing Up

8.  After the day is done, we pack up the remaining Newget and head home to review activities of the day, where hopefully we’ve made new friends and fans.

There you have it, eight easy steps to delicious snacking!

We really do love the market setting because it’s an environment where we get to meet our customers face to face.  It’s where fans become friends.  We hope to see you at the Downtown City Market on 104th Street this summer.

And we suggest that you bring yourself a coffee, it just pairs so well with Newget.  Wine has cheese, coffee has Newget, and Newget has the Edmonton City Market Downtown.

See you this summer, friends!

Love, Newget

Wedding Blog

We’ve got Wedding Fever…

Oh joy, is that Spring in the air?  With spring comes love, and with love comes Summer and Fall weddings!

And with a wedding comes the joy of wedding planning.

You may already have plans for the perfect dress, flowers, photograph poses, decorations, cake and so on.  Or maybe you don’t know where to start just yet?  The Newget Kompany can help.  We love parties, and a wedding reception is one of the happiest parties of all.

The one thing that The Newget Kompany would beOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA overjoyed to help you out with are the wedding favors to thank your guests.  Your parents and friends might have been to a wedding or two that gave out little boxes of matches, or monogrammed shot glasses, or CD’s of favourite songs, but the traditional wedding favor, dating back to European Aristocrats, was a gift called a bonbonniere.  A bonbonniere is a small box made of porcelain, crystal, precious stones or metal, and inside one would find delectable sugar delicacies.  As the years progressed, this treat evolved into sugar coated almonds.

You can see why Newget is the perfect spin on an old tradition, right?  OUR delicacies are made of almonds and sweetness, with a few twists of different chocolate and flavour pairings.  We have many different packaging options for creating the modern bonbonniere for you.  From the small and intimate ceremony to the big and bountiful, Newget can create the perfect favor and flavour, for your guests.  You can have them done your way for your big day.

We love weddings, and we would love to help you out with yours.  Come see us at one of the Events we’ll be participating in this month, and try a sample.  We know you’ll want more.
